Most Migraines are very debilitating and can impact every facet of a sufferer’s life. Commonly, people suffer from moderate-severe head pain, depending on what symptoms they have. If you are a migraine sufferer, you may have experienced nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, sound or smell. Some experience an aura, or in other words, changes to your sensory input, such as unusual visual changes. You may have experienced dizziness, vertigo or felt unsteady. Also, many migraine sufferers report a general sense of fatigue or a “brain fog”, which makes it hard for them to think clearly.

Obviously, those who experience these frustrating symptoms will have a strong motivation to get rid of the migraines!

Migraine sufferers might have tried a range of treatments including physiotherapy, chiropractors, osteopathy, naturopathy, dietetic therapy or even been referred to a neurologist. Neurologists will sometimes prescribe more invasive procedures, such as nerve blocks, blood vessel cauterisation or botox injections to treat the symptoms. All of these treatments give mixed results and many sufferers will turn to medication for long-term symptom management.

Medications

This may range from over-the-counter painkillers such as Paracetamol or Ibuprofen, to stronger drugs called Triptans, which simulate serotonin in the brain. In Australia, some common triptan brand names are Maxalt, Relpax, Imigran, Zomig and Naramig. Medications can work well for some people, but are sometime cost-prohibitive and foster dependency. Unfortunately, prolonged use can actually provoke Medication Overuse Headaches (MOH).

What is my alternative?

If these migraine treatments fail to provide relief, there is another alternative. Recent compelling research has recognised the link between the upper neck and primary headaches and migraines. These findings have paved the way for a highly effective treatment for headaches and migraines, which is treating the brainstem within the upper spinal canal.
